I’ve got too much saddle time and experience to ever consider leaving home without some essential gear. In a previous blog post we discussed “The Bare Necessities” that serious touring riders should always have on board. If you’re heading out on a substantial road trip, I stand by every recommendation made in that post.
There’s only one thing worse than getting soaked to the bone riding in heavy rain. That’s arriving at your destination and finding all of your personal belongings drenched too. Those days are long gone for me.
We’ve already discussed the necessity of using slow/long shutter speeds to create flowing water effects in your images. In order to give moving water that silky, flowing appearance we must record its movement over a period of time through a background that remains still.
The most important trait one must possess is enthusiasm; no matter what pursuits you undertake in life. It has been said that “Men have been racing automobiles ever since they made the first one”. I’ve been around muscle cars and sports cars since I first got my driver’s license at age 16. Fifty years later I’m still drawn to the allure of horsepower and speed.
No discussion about professional motorsports photography techniques would be complete without talking about lens selection. The lenses I carry depend upon the event that I’m covering. The beauty of The Blue Ridge Parkway lies in the fact that it was never designed to be a means of efficient travel between any two points. At 469 miles in length it is America’s longest linear park. Its very design dictated that large population centers were to be avoided. If your goal is to go north or south from point A to point B as quickly as possible this is not the road to take.
In addition to the trade show the BMW MOA National Rally featured a display of some of the finest examples of vintage BMW motorcycles ever assembled. 2023 marked the 100th anniversary of BMW Motorrad and the 50th anniversary of the MOA.
As I roared towards the Canadian border, I could clearly see in the distance, increasingly dark and ominous skies. For me, it was a huge, virtual road sign saying I should pull over, and calmly deploy my rain gear, as soon as possible. So I complied. My two-piece rain suit is thin, but it allows not a drop of water to seep through, no matter what the sky flings towards me.
